ANTON FRANZ HÖGER11-11-2018

(Anton Franz Höger in his atelier.)

Anton Franz Höger
is a German painter born 1956 in Munich. He is a member of the Vienna School of Fantastic Realism, founded by five writers and painters, including Ernst Fuchs. Although he graduated in the late 70s of the last century, he fully dedicated himself to painting only in 2000.

Höger’s artistic origin is characterized by unreal, dreamy motifs in opulent Mannerist style, elaborate techniques of the old Italian and Dutch masters. Despite the admiration towards the artistic finesse of the old masters and eccentric and dynamic Baroque painting that can be seen as a natural basis of Höger’s art or Malgeschichte, his paintings contain the essence of philosophical, and go beyond the ‘pure techniques’ of his painting style. The deciding factor in his artistic creation full of imagination is not one’s own experience as a consumer of art, but the processes that depend on cognition, which are shown as the essence of truth in modern philosophy.

Anton Höger is a winner of many international art prices and his works have been exhibited in numerous cities around the world. Among others in Montreal, New York, Zagreb, Florence, Munich, Nuremberg, Berlin, Frankfurt, Leipzig, Kiel, just to name a few.

FROM THE PRESS :

The unequivocal variety of motifs stretched by Höger's opus - from biblical, geometric and mathematical to motifs associated with psychoanalysis of dreams. In that sense, it is also clear that the painter's theme extends through three temporal dimensions. The past, which is abandoned to myths and biblical characters, places Höger in a modern context, emphasizing the inevitability and universality of issues such as human sinfulness. By painting the expulsion of Adam and Eve, he depicts the problems of women and men caught in chaos in the 21st century. The author achieves gradual achievement of Renaissance humanism mixed with the cold realism he is known for.

In spite of the admiration of the paintwork of old masters and the eccentric-dynamic painting of baroque, which can be considered natural on the basis of Höger's art, his paintings contain the essence of the philosophical, and surpass the 'pure techniques' of his painting style.

Anton Franz Höger's paintings are the mirror of our present exsistence. His work should be seen as a part of creative and indicative actualities of our time. In that sense the deciding factor in his artistic creation full of imagination is not one's own etperience as a consumer of art but the processes that depend on cognition. which are shown as the Essence of truth in  modern philosophy.
(Circle Quarterly)

We know, often secluded, decomposed, coldest, most obscure man's manifestations and depictions, states of consciousness and unconscious, deeply insight into the myth and religion reveal to the observer the opposite - the painter's longing for humanity.
